Dear Prospective Academy Student,
One of the greatest things about the Davidson Academy is its size. A total student population of less than 140 students allows a great deal of opportunity for one-on-one instruction, as well as additional help when needed. It's easier to make connections with students as well as teachers; connections that both aid in the learning process and make it easier to be in the classroom. The problem of “cliques” so common
in public schools, is no longer an issue here. Social connections are made by individuals, and never by groups, meaning that all kinds of people find great friends
that they may otherwise never have met, had it not been for
the Academy. This also allows for the support of different clubs, ranging from social justice, to future physicians, to slam poetry and even cribbage. People are free to
be whoever they want to be here, and that’s a great part of what makes the
Academy an amazing school for anyone who wants to apply.

As difficult as it is to believe, we are already more than halfway through the semester! We are busy helping our graduating seniors plan for their futures, and locate the best match in future academic and personal options. To help them accomplish this, we have set up weekly deadlines to assist them with this often stressful process, and they are working closely with our college coordinator.
We are very excited to see what the future holds for them!
We are all working hard while also having fun this semester – please consider joining us for a tour and applying for the 2015-2016 school year!

Earlier this month members of the Science Olympiad team were able to gain hands-on experience at University of Nevada,
Reno’s Medical School anatomy lab. University medical students led the
team through a heart dissection.
Please support aspiring Lego Product Designer, Timothy Novak, by
reviewing his design idea, Lego Hydra from Greek mythology. Your input regarding potential pricing, difficulty to build, and age range is greatly appreciated
and will help Timothy secure an internship with the Lego
group.
Horses of Thought recently played in the finals of the local music contest,
called Reno Jam Factor. After winning the People’s Choice award, they
also placed
second for a live performance last week at Cargo, a concert
venue at the Whitney Peak Hotel!
Congratulations to
Erin Miller and Rebecca Bennett, who took first place out of 21 teams in the November regional debate tournament!

What subject do you teach?
I currently teach the Science of Happiness and
a College Planning workshop. In the Science of Happiness we are discussing the Seven Principals of Happiness which are from the book The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor and putting the science to the test. Every week I give students personal challenges that we further discuss in class. Next semester we
will spend a lot of time on mindfulness, sleep, meditation, values and happiness in general. It is going to be epic! Since applying to college can be as time consuming as adding
the most difficult class to students' already busy schedules,
the College Planning workshop provides them
with an opportunity to learn more about the process at
school. This semester students have watched informative
videos and compiled their college lists. Next semester
students will learn about the very important college essay. I am also the co-advisor of our dynamite DECA team.
Generally,
give an example of some of the real-world skills students can take with them from your classes.
My goal is for students to learn more about themselves and how their actions affect those around them. By teaching them mindfulness, students can learn more about themselves, why they do the things they do and how to be mindful of others. One of my biggest goals is to help our students further develop an internal locus of control. It is important to me that our students align their expectations with reality so they can be happy, which leads to success. I think this internal locus of control will further develop with knowledge and maturity that hopefully will transcend into the real world.
What do you like best about working with Academy students?
What is there not to like? I
love to hear how students have actually applied what we have been learning and how it has helped them. I think many students haven’t had the opportunity to take courses about mental health, and I am grateful that I have the opportunity to expose our students to this field. Our students have so much to offer, and sometimes they just need a little perspective. I love to be a part of their successes, as well as help them learn and grow from their failures. Our students are incredible and I find it so meaningful working with them. They are incredible individuals. |

“One of the things I love about the Academy is how the staff is able to accommodate students' interests and needs. Due to the wonderful relationship that the Academy has with the University of Nevada Reno, every student can take classes at the University geared toward their own tastes.”
