Academy Graduate Speaks
at TED 2013 Conference
A 2012 graduate of the Academy,
Taylor Wilson recently spoke at the TED conference in Long Beach for the
second consecutive year. Taylor was 14 when he built a nuclear fusion reactor in his parents' garage. Now 19, he returned to the TED stage to present a new take on an old topic: fission.
Taylor explains why he's so excited about his innovative design for small modular fission reactors
and why it could be the next big step in solving the global energy crisis.

Academy Students Shine at 2013 DECA International Career Development Conference Eleven
Academy students recently participated in the four-day
2013 DECA International Career Development Conference
in Anaheim, competing against DECA members from across the United
States and Canada. The conference involved presenting business
plans, as well as conducting role plays and mock interviews on a
variety of topics related to business, marketing, hospitality and
entrepreneurship. Special recognition goes to the following Academy
students:
- Ikya Kandula was awarded a medal for being a top role play performer in her event, Hospitality Lodging Management.
- Divya Tenneti
was awarded a medal for being a top role play performer in her event, Principles of Finance.
- Becki Thompson and Logan Thomason
qualified as top 10 finalists in their event, Hospitality Services Team-Decision Making.
National Merit Scholarships The following Academy students are National Merit Scholarship Competition finalists who have been awarded scholarships from National Merit and their sponsors:
- Aishwarya Krishnamoorthy - University of Rochester National Merit Scholarship
- Ian McKeachie - McKesson Foundation Scholarship
- Angela Xu - RR Donnelley Foundation Scholarship
- Daniel Ziegler - National Merit Scholarship Corporation
"A Dance in the Moonlight" Academy students
recently attended "A Dance in the Moonlight," a fun, highly-successful dance at the Joe Crowley Student Union on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Members of the student council planned every aspect of the event, and their hard work paid off. It was a terrific example of students working together to create an exciting, unforgettable evening.
Basketball Participants A number of Academy students recently joined a
local basketball
league, playing against area school groups. The team,
Not the Lakers, had a great time participating, and are a
wonderful example of the diverse interests exhibited by
Academy students. A few of the team members are pictured at right in
a photo from the dance.
Department of Foreign Languages and Literature Accomplishments Congratulations to the following Academy
students for their recent honors by the University of Nevada, Reno
Department of Foreign Languages and Literature:-
Harry Fosbinder-Elkins was selected to receive the Italian Outstanding First
Year Student Award.
- Ian McKeachie was selected to receive the Arabic Outstanding Second Year
Student Award and an Honorable Mention for Upper Division
Student in the French Language Award.
These awards were presented at the 44th Annual Foreign Languages and Literature Awards Ceremony.
District Debate Tournament The following students achieved excellent results from a recent
District Debate Tournament, which largely determines who goes to the
national competition to
Nationals: Chris Huh finished in 3rd Place in Senate Congress;
Melissa Bak and Addie Oh finished in 4th place in Public Forum
Debate; and Logan Thomason finished in 3rd Place in House Congress.

Newsweek The Davidson Academy made Newsweek’s 2013 rankings of
America’s Best High Schools
and is the highest rated school in Nevada. This ranking highlights the best 1,000 public high schools in the nation, per criteria that show these schools are the most effective in graduating college-ready students.
Sparks Tribune Academy student Dylan Hildebrand
was featured in the Daily Sparks Tribune article,
World Series of Math, as he prepared for the national finals of the American Regions Mathematics League in Las Vegas
(ARML). Dylan won a place on the 15-person Northern
Nevada team that competed at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for the annual ARML competition at the end of the month.
Reno Gazette-Journal Academy graduate Sofia Baig
(pictured, right) received a softball scholarship to play at Pomona College in the fall.
She was featured in this Reno Gazette-Journal
article.
Academy students Rebecca Bauer and Karthik Rohatgi were honored at the Harvard Club of Northern Nevada and the Sierra's Book Prize ceremony,
and are pictured in the Reno Gazette-Journal article,
