Dear Prospective Student,
My name is Ameen Homayoon. I am 15 years old and I have been at the The Davidson Academy of Nevada for
three years. Ever since I came here, my experience at the Academy has been nothing short of awesome.
When I first came to The Davidson Academy, I was excited to meet new people and make new friends, but I was also a bit worried that I wouldn’t find people with anything in common with me. However, everybody was really friendly, and I was able to make new friends with shared interests and socially fit in right away. The students at the Academy are not only very intelligent, but also extremely supportive of each other. We help each other achieve our goals while striving to push ourselves to achieve more. It is this like-mindedness that makes the students of the
Academy unique.
Another distinctive aspect of the Academy is the resources it provides for students who wish to go above and beyond in any subject. The classes are interactive and challenging, and the teachers,
counselors and staff are all very involved with the students. The small classroom size ranging from
four to 11 people allows for superb personal relations between students and instructors, and this in turn helps students
learn. Thanks to the
Academy, I have had a great learning experience which I could not have obtained anywhere else.
If you enjoy being around like-minded peers as well as having an accelerated learning experience, then I welcome you to
check out The Davidson Academy!

Since we are on the same academic
calendar as the University of Nevada, Reno, The Davidson Academy’s
spring semester has just begun following a month-long break. It is
an exciting time! The past few months have been very busy but
incredibly rewarding. Our students have received numerous honors and
accolades and have participated in a wide variety of activities.
We’ve seen students grow and mature both academically and socially,
and look forward to all the possibilities of the coming semester,
including celebrating graduation for 26 students.
We
hope you consider applying for the 2014-2015 school year!

What do you do at The Davidson Academy?
Most of my time spent at the Academy revolves around student schedules. The year-long process involves a number of phases including preregistration to obtain student preferences and needs, organizing the data into preliminary rosters, determining teacher assignments, building a master schedule, conducting semester advising meetings to discuss credits and schedules, and finally, processing schedule changes at the start of fall and spring semesters.
Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) meetings are held once each semester for students who wish to take university classes, and once a year, in the spring, for all other students. In addition to working on schedules, I am also responsible for tracking student credits, monitoring independent study activities, and maintaining
PLPs.
What is your favorite
part about working with Academy students?
Working with Academy students is rewarding in so many ways, especially seeing their personal and academic growth over time. It’s exciting to witness shy, unsure middle school students transform into confident, independent graduates.
Having the opportunity to support students as they explore and pursue their interests and passions is priceless.
What are a few of the more interesting or challenging projects that you have assisted Academy students with?
Last year, I developed and offered a college preparation program for those classified as middle school students up through 9th grade (by age or credit). The program provided information and support to those who were interested, and covered topics such as
résumé and academic profile development, seeking internship and volunteer opportunities, academic skill development, course trajectory and planning, etc. This program is no longer available due to the addition of Counselor and College Consultant Shannon Harrison, who does a fantastic job of offering comprehensive college planning support, among many other services, to all of our students.
For this school year, my project was to create a career planning and exploration program. The online course was launched at the start of fall semester 2013, and three professionals from the community have since visited with our students. The Academy’s career program is now in the hands of Career Advising Manager Rebecca Coleman, who does an amazing job of networking, finding opportunities, and supporting our students.

“Before the Academy, I was sometimes placed in classes where everyone had a different pace, which I felt frustrated about because I’d usually be ahead of the group and unable to go further
. . . I often wished that my classes would be more in-depth, that everyone would work at a similar pace. The Academy has been everything I’ve wanted in this respect. I found the intellectual and social atmosphere to be just fantastic..”
