   Student to Student

Dear Prospective Students,

Hi! My name is Hadley Weiss. I am 16 years old and am currently wrapping up my senior year at The Davidson Academy. My main ambition in coming to the Academy three years ago was, simply put, intellectual challenge. Throughout my entire academic career, I have always wanted to go above and beyond the standard classroom curriculum, and I knew that Davidson could provide me with a wealth of resources to do just that. Over the past few years, my expectations have been repeatedly shattered by my amazing experiences at the Academy.

In each and every class, regardless of the subject, the curriculum at Davidson is designed to really push students to become active participants in their personal education, not simply reading and regurgitating information but digging beneath the surface to search for the ‘how’ or ‘why’ of what they are learning. In addition, because of the small class size, classes are frequently tailored toward the students’ specific interests integrating the subject matter into something much more lasting and meaningful. Davidson also offers a diverse range of Friday electives, from Neurophilosophy to Astronomy, which allows students to dabble in as-yet unfamiliar subjects, expanding their intellectual horizons and perhaps discovering a new passion along the way. Another unparalleled opportunity available to students is the ability to augment their education with courses at the University of Nevada, Reno, on whose campus the school is located. This has personally been one of my favorite aspects of my time at the Academy as it has enabled me to pursue my interests in math and chemistry far beyond the typical high school level, as well as experience the rigor of university-level courses.

But even more than this, by far the best part of being at the Academy has been all of the inquisitive, impassioned, inspiring teachers that I have met throughout my journey here. There is truly nothing I can say that will accurately convey just how absolutely incredible the teachers at Davidson are. Each and every teacher is there because he or she has a profound passion for his or her subject and wants nothing more than to share this with and inspire this in students. The teachers I have worked with throughout the years have all been equally eager to challenge and be challenged by their students, going so far beyond their basic job requirements and investing time and energy in each individual student in order to help him or her grow as a leader and thinker.

Overall, I know that coming to The Davidson Academy was without a doubt the best decision I have ever made, and I cannot imagine being anywhere else.

~ Hadley Weiss, Fourth Year Davidson Academy Student

“When I came to the Academy . . . I was able to show that I could handle a curriculum that very few other schools would let me take. Taking all these hard courses has been very difficult, to say the least, but I am happy I have gotten to learn all that I could. It certainly helps that my peers here are also able to fully understand and appreciate these classes, making for complex and interesting discussions about our lessons a common occurrence, in and out of the classroom.”
