   Student to Student
 Davidson Academy
Greetings Prospective Students,

Hi, I’m Stephan Kim and I’ve been at The Davidson Academy since its birth back in 2006. I’m a senior, preparing to graduate in May and suffering from chronic senioritis. I just wanted to share my experience that I’ve had at the Academy.

So many of you already know about the great academics and teachers the Academy offers. What most of you might not know is that the Academy is also a great place for those of you who are academically inclined student-athletes.

The Academy does not have its own sports teams – which I actually feel works out for the better. Because the Academy has no sports, the local school district allows you to participate in athletics at the school your home is zoned for. The lack of athletics actually opens doors to experience the regular high school sport-life in a large, 4A high school environment. I played one year of JV and three years of Varsity soccer at Galena High School, winning two preseason tournaments, being a regional runner-up, and participating in the state soccer tournament just this last year. I’ve had great moments with my teammates and most of them have become good, if not my best, friends. The option of exporting your athletic skills to another school gives an excellent opportunity to make friends with the students outside the small Davidson Academy community.

By playing soccer at Galena, I’ve actually been given a massive amount of perks and developed an expansive network of friends. I get two lockers at school, one for my school books and the other for my athletic gear. My friends outside school aren’t just my teammates, but also other students who come and support the team or those who I just meet through a friend or teammate. I’ve also been able to attend high school football games and even a large high school Prom.

Many of you might be wondering, “Don’t the kids treat you differently because you don’t actually go to that school?” My answer to that question is this: if you’re good they really could care less.

Attending the Academy can really give you the best of both worlds: an incredible academic environment coupled with the options of an elite athletic program. This relationship – strong academic and athletic abilities – can make you a very competitive prospect for the next level of competitive sports and education.

Meet Ms. Miller, Academy Guidance Counselor

What are some of the things you do to assist students at the Academy?
We do a multitude of things ranging from helping students plan and organize, as well as things like getting along with their peers. We meet with each student at least every other week. During those meetings, we look over their grades and help them plan an approach to study or manage their time for upcoming exams, essays, projects or just their day-to-day homework. We also assist them in communicating with instructors and peers.

Why did you want to become a guidance counselor?
I wanted to become a guidance counselor because I absolutely love working with and helping young people. I have always wanted to work with children and/or adolescents in a helping capacity, so guidance counseling was an excellent fit.

What College Planning services does the Academy offer?
We offer an individualized College Planning service that includes many one-on-one meetings with the College Advisor, Shannon Harrison, as well as our Director Colleen Harsin, and assistance as needed from the guidance counselors. We also offer a meeting with an outside consultant during the beginning of senior year to help with the essay and application process. Shannon works a lot with students to help them find a school that matches their interests as well as their “personalities,” so that the colleges they choose are an all-around good fit.

How has the Academy changed since you first joined the team?
The Academy hasn’t changed too much since I first joined the team 2 ½ years ago. There has consistently been a wonderful sense of cohesiveness between all members and a good amount of consistency. I think the changes that we have seen have been those that have just naturally come with our growth, like more teachers and more students, as well as an expanding curriculum.

Martin Boren, Claire Evans, Anthony Fidaleo, Daniel Hickox-Young and Chloe Williamson, graduating seniors, were selected for their exceptional performance on either the SAT or the ACT assessment. The candidates will now go through a rigorous application process where they must submit candidacy materials, including essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports and transcripts. Students are evaluated on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership, service, other extracurricular activities and an analysis of their essays. Source: Reno Gazette-Journal

Davidson AcademyAcademy students Claire Evans and Anthony Fidaleo were named the Nevada state winners of the 2011 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement (AP). “We’ve got to emphasize how important this is and recognize these incredible young people who are doing things that I couldn’t even imagine thinking about at fifth grade or eighth grade or in high school . . . The young people I met today — you guys inspire me. You’re making sure we’ll always be home to the most creative entrepreneurs, the most advanced science labs and universities. You’re making sure America will win the race to the future.”
