Davidson AcademyHello Prospective Davidson Academy students!

My name is Mallie Prytherch, and I am entering my second year at The Davidson Academy. I’m 14 years old, and I learned about this school through the Davidson Young Scholars program. My family and I debated for years whether I should come to this school or not and, after thoroughly researching the alternatives, we finally decided to try it out. I was a little concerned about the academic structure of the Academy because I had been unschooled my entire life (except for a couple of disastrous days in private "gifted" school.) The transition to the Academy was much easier than I expected, almost seamless. I moved 3,000 miles to attend and I’m glad I did. I always had high expectations of this school and I’m glad to say it measured up!

The school environment is really wonderful. Although there is a relatively small amount of students, the diversity is high. There are so many different interests in this school, you are sure to find somebody to talk to about subjects ranging from “what do you think of my shirt” to the history test to nuclear physics.

Another thing I like about this school is that the teachers are so cool. This year, I got life lessons in math class, (“If you get away with cheating now, it’ll just catch up to you later"), got to debate between granola bars and Davidson Academycheese sticks in Composition class, raced my teacher to history class (I won), and studied for my science test by singing. And, of course, no one in my French class will ever forget the French word for sing, “chanter,” sung at the top of my lungs in an operatic voice.

However, behind all the fun there is a ton of learning concealed. The learning itself, once you get to it, is awesome. The classes are hard (some more so than others), but they are very fun and satisfying. The teachers come up with great ways to teach us stuff, from posters and debates to discussions and PowerPoints.

“My classes are challenging, but really fun. We move at a faster pace, getting more done in shorter time. I learn beyond my textbooks, taking my knowledge further than what happens within the classroom. The Academy really is a great place to learn and connect.”
